The Intrecciato is a handcrafted leather braiding technique that transforms leather into structure and texture at the same time.
It is a form of construction where each crossing brings strength, depth and character.
At Global Leather Goods we take this technique and use it for our new collection developing unique pieces with their own character, where the structure and texture elevate the design without detracting from the essence of the product.
Where does the intrecciato come from?
The word Intrecciato literally means “intertwined” in Italian. But its history begins long before fashion made it an icon.
Ancient civilizations were already braiding leather straps to make sandals, belts and harnesses.
The reason?
Very simply, by interlacing the skin, the tension was better distributed and the piece gained strength without losing flexibility.
In Europe, during the Middle Ages, saddlery workshops perfected the technique. Leather braiding was functional, durable and adaptable.
Decades later, in the Italy of the 1960s and 1970s, the intrecciato took modern form.
In Italy, Bottega Veneta perfected this technique in response to a technical limitation: sewing machines could not accurately work certain thick leathers without compromising flexibility, without stiffening them. The solution was manual: cutting thin strips and interlacing them to achieve soft, resistant and flexible surfaces.
What started as a technical solution became a symbol of quiet luxury.
2025 marked 50 years since intrecciato established itself as a contemporary signature in high-end leather goods.
Half a century proving that authentic technique does not expire.
Why is leather braiding still relevant today?
Because it provides something that no smooth surface can offer: depth.
Braided leather:
- Reinforces the structure.
- It distributes the load evenly.
- Allows natural flexibility.
- Interacts with light to create unique shades.
And most importantly: it communicates real craftsmanship, because each piece is built by hand, crossing by crossing.
What you can’t see: the work behind the intrecciato
Each strip must have exactly the same thickness.
Each crossing must maintain the same tension.
Each angle should align with the natural direction of the fiber.
If the skin is too dry, it is marked.
If the tension is irregular, the part will deform with use.
If the cut is not exact, the pattern loses harmony.
A Intrecciato handcrafted can require hours of work on a single piece. It does not speed up without the result giving it away.
Intrecciato and silent luxury
One of the reasons why the Intrecciato Intrecciato bag became iconic is its ability to convey quality without fanfare.
No need for prints or large logos.
Silent luxury does not shout. It is recognized in the regularity of the texture, in the precision of the finish and in the structural coherence of the piece.
Well-executed leather braiding has something that cannot be easily imitated: balance.
How to identify a good bag Intrecciato
For professionals and brands working with leather goods, these are the key criteria:
- Completely uniform weave.
- Constant tension on the entire surface.
- Well polished and sealed edges.
A good intrecciato does not ripple, does not deform and does not lose alignment over time.
More than a trend: a positioning decision
Choosing to work braiding in leather makes a statement.
It means betting on:
- Craftsmanship.
- Permanence.
- Structural quality.
- Identity based on technique.
That’s why at Global Leather Goods we wanted to honor this technique.
We understand that the Intrecciato is a blend of tradition and contemporary design.
Each piece has its own story.
Each crossing has its tension.
And each intertwined strip keeps the gesture of the person who worked on it.
